Depleted Uranium weapons are Not used in Iraq according to Congressman Mike Pence IN06
I am Barry Welsh and I am running for the Congressional Seat currently held by Mike Pence, chair of The Republican Study Committee. I am the Democratic Party nominee, having won our primary by just over 69%.
Mr. Pence was in Anderson Indiana for a town hall meeting Saturday Morning.
Here is the Anderson Herald Bulletin story and I will include some comments from on line readers below the fold for those of you that don't read the article. There is no mention of Depleted Uranium in the article. It was not included in the reporting, but it was documented by those in attendance. That too, below the fold.
We cannot let the military use and the consequences of the use of DU be ignored or falsly dimissed as untrue.
I can win this race, with help, Some of the People in this district have had enough! A Letter to the editor on Mr. Big Oil, before the head in the sand over DU weapons.
Mike Pence's recent votes against H.R. 4297 (requiring oil companies to pay their fair share of taxes) and the Federal Energy Price Protection Act (H.R. 5253, to ban fuel price gouging) are just more examples that this congressman is not "our" representative but is instead a representative for oil companies. His votes prove he is putting the protection of their bloated profits ahead of his 6th district constituents! We need an explanation from Mr. "Profit First -- People Last" Pence!
Here is a letter to the editor from someone at Saturday's Pence town hall on the DU issue:
At the Anderson Town Meeting this past Saturday, Representative Mike Pence denied that the U.S. military used depleted uranium munitions. The US military has done so and admits it has done so at great cost to US troops as well as the people of Iraq. The Pentagon itself admits that there are about 250,000 casualties from the first Gulf War which is about half of the casualties in the entire war in Vietnam. Of these casualties, many are sick with "Gulf War syndrome" and clear evidence points to many of these illnesses caused by the radioactivity of depleted uranium munitions.
At the town meeting I quoted Major Doug Rokke of the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps who was part of the Depleted Uranium Assessment Team in the first Gulf War. He says: "We were charged with cleaning up the mess left by the thousands of bombs, rockets and missiles enriched with depleted uranium that the U.S. dropped on Iraq. My service has cost me dearly. I am one of many Gulf War veterans suffering from illnesses related to exposure to depleted uranium...But the worse part is the betrayal of my own government. The Department of Defense and Veterans Administration officials continue to deny medical care to thousands of U.S. soldiers who are sick and dying from DU."
Whether or not we support the wars in Iraq, all ought to be concerned about the health of troops who have served. Contact Mike Pence and other elected officials to demand that veterans be tested and treated for DU and that the US ban the use of these weapons
Congressman Pence had to suddenly catch a plane after this exchange that is described above, and the meeting was quickly ended.
Some people here in Indiana are still blind :
Pence supporter Bob Ivy, a Navy radio operator in World War II, said he talked with a Marine and soldier who said the news Americans receive is different from actual occurrences in the Middle East.Seventy-nine-year-old Ivy said he doesn't like to have war, but believes it is justifiable to fight terrorism.
"You can't fight a war without someone being killed," Ivy said. "I think freedom is coming to the Middle East."
One final comment from the Anderson Herald Bulletin website comment section on Mr. Pence:
Mike Pence is nothing but a Bush yesman. If you like what Bush is doing to our country you should vote for Pence and if you don't like what Bush is doing to our country you should vote him out.
The people have had enough. Do not let the total horror of war distract us from the particular horror and delayed effects of Depleted Uranium munitions.
Barry Welsh Indiana 6th District Democratic Party Congressional Candidate
